“Imagine” is more than just one of the greatest songs by one of the greatest artists of all time – doing it can even make you momentarily forget all the death, destruction, and debt ceiling debacles caused by Republicans just since 2000. (Oops. Moment’s gone. They don’t seem to care that Iraq cost hundreds of thousands of human lives. My bad.)
Imagine, if you will, what life could’ve, would’ve, and should’ve been like if the 2000 election had not been stolen. Imagine if we had never invaded Iraq. Imagine if those people were still alive. But, alas, not only are they dead – now the Republicans are calling for us to invade Iran.
And if that doesn’t send you running screaming to the polls to vote for Dems in every single race up and down the ticket, nothing will. Well, maybe the rest of this blog post will help…
You see, nothing – not even the wonders of our imagination – can reverse the unimaginable horrors visited upon this world since the modern GOP brought us down.
First, after stealing the 2000 election with the help of the right-wing Supreme Court, we now know that George W. Bush and his band of not-so-merry-men (and, to be fair, a few women) were plotting to attack Iraq even before the 9/11 tragedy. And that they were so busy focused on that, they failed to act on a steady stream of insistent warnings from the intelligence community about how Bin Laden and Al Qaeda’s plans to attack us on our soil were real.
“Fan-freaking-tastic,” these schemers must have thought. “Now we can blame Saddam, claim he’s got weapons of mass destruction (who’s gonna even notice we were the ones who sold them to him in the ‘80s…heh-heh-heh…mo’ money for us!). First, let’s pretend we’re going after Bin Laden in Afghanistan – all this weaponry and other equipment will earn our buds in the defense community billions, I tells ya, billions! Then they can spend that on getting us re-elected. Man, don’t ya just love the great circle of death. And it was awesome that Reagan armed the Taliban 20 years ago, right?”
Enough imagining what those bastards might’ve been thinking. We know exactly what they did. They refused to accepted career military’s assessment for how to be successful in this invasion, illegal though it may be. So they sent in fewer forces and, after toppling the regime, failed to protect armor, money, and antiquities – not to mention human life. And away it went into the hands of the enemy, fast-growing insurgents pouring into Iraq to turn a “three-month incursion” into a 10-year death trap.
Estimated number of deaths? Between 100,000 and 1 million. Estimated financial costs? Between two and three trillion dollars will have been spent when all is said and done, including medical care for our wounded warriors. More if you count damage to the US economy. And, of course, going to Iraq instead of remaining focused on Afghanistan also cost more lives, more money, more damage to domestic and international economies and relationships.
So far, in the 10 years we’ve had troops in Afghanistan? About 30,000 dead all in. Add it to the cost of the Iraq War, and we’ve easily caused hundreds of thousands of deaths at a cost of $4 trillion and counting. For fun, let’s imagine again where we could be as a country if those people were still around. Allowed to flourish. Allowed to live normal lives. A much smaller national debt.
And now that the Republicans are foaming at the mouth about invading Iran to protect Israel, do you really need another reason to vote for Democrats?
Please. I’m begging you. PAY ATTENTION. Imagine what will happen if you don’t.
